Travel advisory :  Rarefied Perch by a Sacred

Mountain in Bhutan

New York Times  April 25, 2004

Living up to its reputation for luxurious lodging in exclusive locations, Amanresorts will open the first of six planned resorts in the hermetic Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan at the end of this week. The 24-suite Amanrila Paro is 20 minutes from Bhutan's only international airport, in Paro, in the shadow of a 17th-century fortress monastery and Chomo Lhari, a 24,000-foot peak and one of the kingdom's most sacred mountains. The Amanrila includes a spa, a library and a restaurant serving Indian, Western and Bhutanese dishes. Rooms, which have king beds and traditional Bhutanese wood-burning stoves, are furnished simply but elegantly, with wood paneling and other natural materials. While many trekking outfits offer tours through Bhutan, Amanresorts, based in Singapore, says it is the first foreign company allowed to establish a property there.

The other resorts, also to be called Amanrila, will be in Thimpu, Punakha, Gante, Trongsa and Bumthang. Bhutan, a Buddhist country only half the size of Indiana, was long off limits to foreign tourists, secluded by towering mountains and by a prohibition on visitors that was not lifted until 1974.  While King Jigme Singye Wangchuck has been slowly opening Bhutan to the world, allowing television and the Internet, residents are still required to wear traditional costume, and the number of tourist visas issued each year is limited. The only way to stay at the Amanrila is to take a seven-day tour, which includes two days at the Paro resort. Visitors will be taken by car over mountain passes to explore different valleys, stopping to view ancient monasteries and temples and staying at other lodges, described by Aman as "an authentic part of this cultural experience," until the new Amanrilas are built. The price is $7,429 for a couple and $5,914 for one, including taxes, service charges, all meals, a car, driver and guide, but not air fare. That's the introductory offer. On Dec. 1, the price will go up to a stunning $9,657 a couple and to $8,362 for one. Amanresorts can arrange air transportation and tourist visas. Information: (800) 477-9180 or www.amanresorts.com.
